Shallow Tank Aquascape - Part 2

This film is the second part of a mini series on scaping a large shallow tank jungle aquascape spanning two tanks- and two sections of the green wall. The idea ...is to create coherence, and make the two tanks look like one – using houseplants, aquarium plants, wood, leaves and other botanicals to create the illusion.

Ginga Rubra Guppy - Aquarium storytelling

It is Friday… and it is storytelling time. Today with the tale of a very special guppy strain: The Ginga Rubra, a small and very beautiful ornamental guppy, created back ...in the 90´s by the late Japanese fish breeder Kenjiro Tanaka.

Back in the 80’s and 90’s guppy breeders worldwide worked hard to produce new fancy guppy strains – and like in everything else in that era, bigger and more flashy seemed to be the main goal. Some fancy guppies were so big, bulky and long finned, that they were seriously restricted in their swimming motions.

Some breeders found that the ornamental fish had moved way to far from the small, slender and super agile fish, that were found in 1859 in Venezuela, and later named after Robert John Lechmere Guppy, who found specimens in Trinidad and introduced the Guppy or Poecilia reticulata to the European aquarium trade in 1866.

One of these fish breeders was Japanese aquarist Kenjiro Tanaka, a somewhat mysterious and withdrawn character. Tanaka wanted to take guppy breeding a step back… back to the beginning and… in some way…. back to nature as well. This philosophy caused him to aim for small-bodied agile guppies with rich, natural coloration and contrast.

The obvious place to start was with feral guppies, that had established thriving populations in Japanese rivers and streams. These fish had after generations in the wild, adapted to their environment, and already had many of the traits that Tanaka wanted.

He started his breeding project with these wild fish and managed to create several beautiful guppy strains that honored the origin of the guppy. One of these was the Ginka Rubra.

In this video we tell the full story about Tanaka and the Rubra Ginga Guppy. Hope you enjoy it.
